Eight characteristics of Christ's priesthood

In this lesson, we consider "the apostle and high priest of our confession, Christ Jesus" (Heb 3:1). Our study is mainly in the book of Hebrews.

A Priest Who Helps the Tempted
He is a merciful and faithful high priest who is able to aid those who are tempted (Heb 2:17-18; Heb 4:14-16; 1Co 10:13)

A Priest Like Melchizedek
He is a priest according to the order of Melchizedek. This is a higher order than that of Levi and Aaron (Heb 5:5-11 Psa 110:4).

Melchizedek was not only a priest but a king (Heb 7:1 Gen 14:18-20)
Melchizedek was greater than Abraham from whom the the priestly tribe of Levi was descended (Heb 7:4-10)
If the priesthood of Levi and Aaron were perfect, a priest after the order of Melchizedek would not be required (Heb 7:11).
Our Lord was not descended from Levi but from Judah. The kings were descended from Judah, but not the priests. This means that a complete change of priesthood has taken place (Heb 7:12-14).

A Priest Forever
He is a priest "for ever" with the power of an endless life. It was a weakness of the old order of priests that they were subject to death. Christ has permanence (Heb 7:15-17,23-25).

Sworn in by God's Own Oath
He is a priest who has been sworn in by an oath made by God (Heb 7:20-22; Heb 6:13-20 Gen 22:15-18). It was another weakness of the old order of priests that they were without such an oath.

A Priest Who is Perfect
He is a perfect priest. It was a very great weakness in the old order of priests that they were sinners like the people for whom they offered sacrifices (Heb 7:26-28; Heb 4:15).

He Offered Himself as the Sacrifice
He is a priest who offered himself as a perfect sacrifice that never needed to be repeated (Heb 7:27 Heb 10:11-18). Another problem with the old order of priesthood was that they had no perfect sacrifice, so they had to continually and repeatedly, day after day, year after year, offer sacrifices (Heb 10:1-4; Heb 11-12 Heb 9:25).

A Priest in the Heavenly Sanctuary
He is a priest of a heavenly sanctuary, not an earthly one (Heb 8:1-4 Heb 9:11,24). Note: If Jesus were ever to officiate in an earthly temple he would break the law of Moses (Heb 7:14 Heb 8:4).

The Mediator of a Better Covenant
He is a priest who is the mediator "of a better covenant" (Heb 8:6 Heb 12:24 1Tm 2:5-6). God's law now comes to us through Christ and this law is covered by grace through Christ's sacrifice and priesthood.

We Have Access to God Through Him
Through him we ourselves have access into the holy place (Heb 6:19-20 Heb 10:19-20). Remember: this holy place is no longer an earthly temple, but a heavenly and spiritual one (Heb 9:11 cf Heb 13:10,15-16 1Pe 2:5,9 Rev 1:6). Christ "is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us" (Rom 8:32-34). Our prayers go by the Spirit through Christ to God.

Several Internet Versions of Who Am I?

Since you are a saint in Christ by God's calling, you share in Christ's inheritance. That which is true of Christ is now true of you, because you are in Christ. It's part of your identity.

The list below itemizes in first-person language who you really are in Christ. These are some of the scriptural traits which reflect who you become when you accept Christ into your heart. You can't earn them or buy them any more than a person born in America can earn or buy the rights and freedoms he enjoys as an American citizen. They are guaranteed to him by the Constitution simply because he was born in the United States. Similarly, these traits are guaranteed to you by the Word of God simply because you were born into God's holy nation by faith in Christ.

(Ephesians 2:10)

I am righteous and holy. (Ephesians 4:24)

I am born of God, the evil one cannot touch me. (1 John 5:18)

I am not the great "I am" but by the grace of God, I am what I am. (1 Corinthians 15:10)

Because you are in Christ, every one of those characteristics is completely true view, and there's nothing you can do to make them more true. But you can make these traits more meaningful and productive in your life by simply choosing to believe what God has set about you. One of the greatest ways to help yourself grow in maturity in Christ is to continually remind yourself who you are in Him. Read the list once or twice a day for a week or two. The more you reaffirm who you are in Christ, the more your behavior will begin to reflect your true identity.

If you're beginning to think you are someone special as a Christian, you're thinking right-you are special! Your specialness is not the result of anything you have done. It's all God's doing.

What is the believers hope? That he will someday be changed in the Christ's image? That's part of it, but that's only a future hope. What is your hope for today and tomorrow? That your child of God now! And the person whose confidence is in being a child of God "purifies himself"-he begins to live according to his perception. Let me state that again: no person can consistently live in a manner that is inconsistent with how he perceives himself. You must see yourself as a child of God in order to live like a child of God. The blessed hope for the believer is "Christ in you, the hope of glory." (Colossians 1:27)

Living Faith – OMPC - September 17, 2006
Life of Christ -2

Fulfillment of the prophecy: What does God the Father say, as recorded in the Old Testament, about who Jesus is, why he came, and what his function was.

1. What does prophecy mean?
Messianic prophecies - The Bible has many prophecies that ancient rabbis identified as being "Messianic," meaning that they speak about an "anointed one" - a special person anointed by God - to carry out work ordained by God. Christians, believe that Jesus Christ is the fulfillment of the Bible's Messianic promises.

2. Sources of prophecy? Why is the accuracy of prophecy important?

3. Accuracy of Bible prophecy?
The Old Testament of the Bible was written more than 2000 years ago. Christians call it the Old Testament. Jews call it the Tanakh. Both regard it as the word of God. The Old Testament contains hundreds of prophecies about the future. These prophecies are not "predictions," they are promises from God.

The Old Testament includes about 60different prophecies, with more than 300 references, of the coming of the Messiah. It was through the fulfillment of these prophecies that Israel was told she would be able to recognize the true Messiah when He came. The four gospels record several times when Jesus said that He was fulfilling a prophecy of the Old Testament. Luke 24:27 records, "And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself." And verse 44 notes, "And he said unto them, these are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and the prophets and the psalms, concerning me." Jesus Christ himself said, "For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me; for he wrote about Me" (John 5:45-47)Likewise, Christ's disciples taught that He fulfilled Old Testament prophecy (e.g., Acts 3:18; 17:2-3; 1 Corinthians 15:3-4).
